The elevator driving machine is located at the top of the shaft classifying this space in the overhead as "Machinery Space". The driving machine is stationery and is impossible to move from its final installation. (see NEC 620.2 Definitions). The elevator controller is also located in the elevator shaft when the elevator is in normal operation classifying this space as a "Control Space" (see NEC 620.2 Definitions). Also, when the elevator controller is slid out of the door jamb, this is only when the elevator is receiving service or inspections, not during normal service. Once the elevator controller is slid back into it normal position behind the fire rated door jamb, its returns to the shaft surrounded by fire rated materials. UL engineers indicated that the wood framed walls were not rated per those assemblies and in order to afford them the 1-hr. protection they required a second layer of 5/8" type X sheetrock applied to the outside of the assembly was required. While not identical, there is enough similarity here to use the same solution. Indicate 2 layers of sheetrock on the unit side of the wall.
